black friday

You are not sure what kind of deals this black friday offers when the stores open at the midnight of black friday. You see a lot of deals floating around in the internet. You see the threat of limited stocks and deals that are supposedly great. You save on the price of stuff you dont need. You buy stuff you wouldn't buy because you get it cheaper than you would have otherwise.
I walked into the trap too.We need to move into a new home once the company provided hotel accomodation is over. You don't really need a new TV when you don't have the time to complete your work at home with no maid help. You definitely don't need one right away when you are almost broke. You were here to make some money and you get to experience what poverty feels like. No, there are loads of people much more unfortunate than you are. However, when you look into the world with the visiona myopia that you are used to looking at the world with, you feel poor when you dont seem to be able to do the things that you want to.And yes, in that sense , we are poor.
Let us put another flavor now.A TV that would cost 3 lakhs in Indian ruppees in India can be got here for fifty thousand here is the perception that my friend Gorle gave me.While I don't have the hard facts with me,I suppose he has the hard facts with him.Let me try to justify my purchases. You need to have a TV at home - atleast later on when you are not this broke and you might need to have to spend more money then than now.Well even that is not a good argument because electronic prices erode like age.So that is not a justification. The reason is that you are lured.Something that I can say in my favor is that I had kept a budget of 500$ and I stuck to it like a loyal dog sticks to his master.Completely unfamiliar with electronics, I had to talk to people , browse the net , browse the shops etc just to form an opinion. And the opinion is skewed by the tendency to have the latest technology that sounds well on gossip circles.Yes, to some extent, I might have chosen LED over LCD just because LED is in fashion.I think LED is better but I have not done an objective machine analysis.
The other purchase was a DSLR.I am a budding photographer 'paused' a few years back somewhere around my marriage time.Photography had happened earlier when you had loads of time and you would just take your camera and go where-ever and just waste your time like you lose water from a broken tank. While you are getting all drenched, something strikes you and you take a snap. There have been patterns like these. There have also been cases of go to a famous place and cover as much as you can.Ok, so now I am in the US and I have already seen and missed the beauty of autumn uncaptured in photography. The potential of usage is very high. Also, once you have some money, you might spend more than you would do now.Well, I had actually decided to drop this as well and had just gone to best buy for the fun of it just in case I can just walk around and let something slide me down.We were standing at the very end of the line and I was kidding that we might get a chance to be on TV as they would get to the end of the line to show how long it is.The left over deal-pamphlets were trickling down to the wee end of the queue. The one pamphlet that came to me was a Canon DSLR T3, the very camera that I have been pondering over for quite some time.Well, I spoke to Divya and was ready to let her conversation decide on whether to use the pamphlet or not.Her thoughts went like this "I support spending money on camera than on TV as TV is just for entertainment where as camera is something that can be used".What she also was getting at is that you don't need to hurry the purchase now. After deliberations, we decided to go ahead.Feels ok to use it.
Ok so what I did was that I bought the TV on wednesday, thursday being a holiday(Thanks Giving) as the store associate had told that the deal was not going to change on black friday and even if it did I would buy the one on black friday and return the one I am buying on wednesday. That way, I had reserved the TV and that took a lot of noise of indecision out of my system. We also purchased a vacuum cleaner, which is a more justifiable purchase as it falls under the necessity list of a home-committed.Only 4 pieces of the TV were available and I felt I had done the right thing as the chances of the 4 being out of stock on black friday was good whereas on black friday, when I checked, the 3 remained and at the same price.Well that did not leave me anything to brag about and also brought in some apprehension on whether I have actually bought a good TV after all.

Well it is thanksgiving season. So let me thank the people who have been instrumental in this shopping exercise. Firstly I would like to thank Gorle who has been my compatriot through ups and downs as we struggled from unawareness to wrong lessons to lucky breaks on shopping. I would also like to thank Mahesh Narayanan who led the purchases of the home stuff like comforters, kitchen plate set, kitchen vessel set, iron box etc. He was telling me what I need to buy, he made sure that I bought good quality ones , he took us( Gorle,Stalin) from Best Buy to Walmart. Though it was regular shopping and not necessarily black friday shopping, with the car handicap, we might even have ended up with absolutely no stuff in our new apartment - possibly living on bread , struggling with the rented car , struggling with finding the routes to shops , struggling with time, struggling with disorganization. Mahesh took the lead and took me along.I would also like to thank my wife Divya who has played a very supportive role even while she was not physically present with me.

Well it was fun too actually. We had initially by mistake stood in a big gap in the line which was very close to the entrance.People had come in front saying we were here before you and also there were people complaining.I wanted to go back but the other end of the line was not to be seen.Well in some time the cops turned up and asked if someone has pushed the way in and everyone pointed to the missing section that had got filled up with new folks and all of us had to go back. Once the shopping and billing at Best Buy was done, as described earlier, Mahesh conducted the purchases for my new home from Walmart after which we checked out Costco to check for Mahesh's zoom for xbox where as I checked for a better deal for the TV which I did not get.But I ended up buying a Sony Blu-ray player and that too a wifi/3D enabled one just in case.
On the whole, it was a nice experience - the purchases - Bose Head phones over the net(97$), Samsung 40 inch LED TV ( 499$) , Canon Rebel T3 DSLR + bag + UV filter + 8GB Ram ( 479$) , Vacuum cleaner(70$) , Seagate hard drive(750GB) - 59$, Microwave - GE( 81$) , Iron Box(20$) , Comforter set(48$) , comfoter2(18$) , Iron-T table(15$), Kitchen vessel set(100$)/plate set(25$), bathroom rugs,shower curtains,Sony Blu-ray player(104$).
